All practices are held on the school field, unless otherwise indicated. If you cannot make a practice, please ensure you speak to your coach prior to practice occurring.

Cross Country Running

Thank you to all the students who came to our information meeting and practice this week.  We were unable to distribute forms at our Thursday practice due to the system (internet) being down, but they are ready to go for our next practice on Monday, Sept. 11 at 3:20pm.  All students who wish to participate in our cross-country season need to attend this practice to collect forms to be returned on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to Ms. Hartling or Ms. Houston.  Our first meet is Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Stanley Park and forms must be completed and submitted before students can participate.

Off Campus Lunch Time Expectations

When leaving MSS campus/property at lunch, student expectations as outlined in the CBE Student Code of Conduct still apply to actions and behaviours in the community and when accessing local businesses.  Issues caused in the neighbourhood/community and/or at local businesses will be dealt with by the school and possibly Calgary Police Service (CPS).

Fine Arts Update – Mrs. Walker

This week in Fine Arts students began class by learning about a featured "Artist of the Day". This list of inspirational visual artists included:

  • NYC based LGBTQIA+ mixed-media artist Mickalene Thomas.
  • The "Father of Cubism" Pablo Picasso.
  • The chaotically brilliant mind of Jean Michel Basquiat.
  • UK based abstract figurative artist Rachel Jones.

Each of these artists explores identity, sense of place, and the exploration of "Line Quality" in their work.

In addition to this, students explored the absurdity of the Dada Art Movement by engaging in a fun activity where chance plays the role of director in their process by pulling nouns/subjects from a hat and creating compositions that incorporate each element in a whimsical way.

All students had the opportunity to explore new mediums this week by experimenting with a combination of water, India ink, and alcohol ink on watercolor paper. Observing the effects of capillary action, or what is known as "ink feathering" in printmaking, students then used the dried products in warm-up activities where they consequently applied a variety of mark-making techniques to generate an image as a sort of Rorschach test. Students also explored other mediums including oil pastels, charcoal, wire, and graphite.
