Track and Field – What It Looks Like to Make the Team

Track and Field is one of our favourite sports to coach because of the number of athletes we are able to involve and the many opportunities available for students to participate and contribute to the team.

Marshall Springs can enter up to 3 athletes per offered event, per gender, and identify one alternate for each event who may compete in case any entered athlete is unable to compete.

Exceptions include:

  • Grade 6 athletes: No Hurdles and No Discus
  • Relay: School may enter 3 relay teams per grade; 1 consisting of 4 girls (girls relay), 1 consisting of 4 boys (boys relay), and 1 consisting of 2 boys and 2 girls (mixed relay).

Our tryout form strongly encourages athletes to attend practices, as consistent participation demonstrates commitment and will be considered when determining who attends the Track and Field Meet.

It has also been communicated that final selections for the Track Meet are a coaches’ decision, and when we are faced with difficult decisions, final cuts are based primarily on top performances/results. Practice attendance, effort, and commitment may also be considered when making final decisions.

Remember, one of the great things about Track and Field is that there are many opportunities for athletes to participate. If an athlete does not receive their first-choice event, we can often find another event where they feel comfortable competing and still contribute to the team.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Check in with the field event and tell the event manager that they currently have a track event but will return to the field event after the track event
  • The athlete competes in the track event
  • The athlete then returns to the field event
  • The field event manager will do their best to allow the athlete the appropriate number of throws or jumps, but time may limit this.  It is also possible that the Field Event may finish while the athlete is away
