PARTICIPATION IN HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION |
PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION We ask that if a student is to be excused from participa MEDICAL CONDITIONS: We request that PE teachers be informed of any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries. This enables PE teachers to be aware of anything that could impact participation in physical activity and help students. SEXUAL EDUCATION CONTENT: Gr. 6-9 Human Sexuality: Details and information will be provided to families mid-late September 2025 by MSS via the CBE. |
STUDENT ROUTINES |
FOOTWEAR in HPE: Proper footwear is MANDATORY for the safety of individual students and others. Athletic shoes with non-marking soles and good grip are required for PE. Shoes must be fully laced up. Shoes not acceptable in HPE include sandals, boots, Crocs, or heels. Students will be given reminders, followed by contacting home. HPE CHANGING: Students are encouraged to change their clothing for HPE into safe clothing to move in for HPE activities. Wearing items or clothing that could cause injury to self or others, such as belts, belt loops, chains, buttons, etc, can cause a safety concern in the majority of our HPE activities. Clothing that allows a good range of motion, such as stretchable pants or shorts, is recommended. If possible, choose breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics like athletic wear. Also, layers that can be adjusted for varying temperatures for outdoor activities should be considered. It is recommended to wear layers in cool and cold weather conditions. Winter weather clothing recommendations include snow pants, mittens, toques, and boots. Fall and Spring clothing recommendations include hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Please be prepared for class! CHANGING TIME: Students are provided with 5 minutes to change at the beginning and end of each period. HYGIENE: We encourage students to bring an extra change of clothes to stay comfortable throughout the day if they get sweaty during class. Due to the repeated use of HPE clothing, we require that the students take home PE wear to launder frequently. JEWELLERY: For safety, students are asked to remove jewelry, except stud earrings, before PE. We suggest they have a small container to keep it safe from falling through the ventilation holes in the lockers. PERSONAL MOBILE DEVICES are prohibited from entering the changing rooms or HPE area as per CBE policy. FOOD is to be eaten during our Nutrition Breaks and lunch hours and should not be brought to any of your gym spaces or instructional spaces. BRING A WATER BOTTLE: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during physical activities indoors or outdoors. Bringing a water bottle to every class and staying hydrated helps to maintain energy levels and ensure students stay healthy during our activities. If you or your parents/guardians have any concerns regarding changing, please speak with your HPE teacher so that we can create a plan that supports successful participation. PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY Physical Education classes will include participation in community walks within our local community. These walks are a great way to get active and become familiar with our community. They take place on our local pathway systems and sidewalks. GENERAL ROUTINES:

Choice in Physical Education
Choice has been shown to have a positive effect on students’ motivation and increase self-determination. Self-determination in physical education is about reshaping class environments to promote active lifestyles independent of fitness or abilities (Deci & Ryan, 2000). To provide students with choices in their physical education experience at Marshall Springs, the HPE program has been structured to include modules for students in grades 6–9, in which students have a choice in the activities they participate in.
