MSS ATHLETIC TEAMS

There is a broad selection of interscholastic sports teams for interested students in Grades 6 through 9, provided by the Middle School Athletics. Soccer, Cross Country, and Basketball start the year off, followed by Wrestling, Volleyball, Badminton, and Track and Field.  We encourage all students to get involved in our extra-curricular program, whether it is interscholastic or intramural, to enhance their physical and social development. Students interested in interscholastic athletics must have completed the CBE annual athletic authorization form.

Intramural and Development Sports

  • Everyone is welcome to participate
  • The emphasis is on learning the game/sport and having fun
  • Friendly, cooperative games take place during lunch hour designated days.

Interscholastic Sports

  • Evaluations determine who will be selected for the teams
  • The emphasis is on competitive play
  • Players compete at various schools in the CBE
  • There is a team fee for playing to cover the costs of running the team, for example, tournaments and referees.

Athletic Try-out Authorization Form

Athletes will need a completed Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout form before participating in tryouts. Additionally the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act form.

If a student does not have their form in, they can phone home and get confirmation that they are able to attend, and then they can bring the form in the next day.

Athletes will be given a minimum of 2 tryout opportunities to showcase their best effort. Coaches may organize additional tryouts for selected athletes by invitation.

Tryout and Team Composition

Tryout schedules will be posted on athletic bulletin boards, Marshall Time Slides and our school website at least 2 weeks in advance.  Interest meetings are sometimes held at coaches discretion.

Grade 6 and 7 are eligible to try out for the JUNIOR Teams.

NEW --> Grade 8’s are eligible to try out for the SENIOR Team or the JUNIOR team.  If they are unsuccessful in making the SENIOR team, the coaches will advise them to go to the JUNIOR tryout.

Grade 9’s are eligible to try out for the SENIOR Teams.

Team Selection

We pride ourselves on having an amazing coaching staff here at Marshall Springs.   Coaches at the Junior and Senior level will be making decisions based on what is best for each team.  Some of the things coaches are looking for are the following:

  • Coachability, in the ability to apply feedback to develop skills.
  • Leadership and teamwork ability.
  • Confidence and ability to "go for the ball, move or shot.”
  • Game sense, specifically the ability to "read" what is happening, react, and recover.
  • Work ethic and level of effort invested,
  • Athletic ability, for example, speed, power, strength, coordination, balance.
  • Basic skills; these are often the easiest aspect to develop if the above are in place.
  • Creating a well-rounded team (positions needed and combination of strengths).

What if I don't make the team?

Not all students will be successful in making the team.  We are offering Lunch time Development practices and play which will be offered once or twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays based on the number of students that are interested.

CBE Concussion Protocol

What are the steps to follow when a concussion is suspected?

  • At school or during school-related activities, if a concussion is suspected, stop the student’s participation in the activity and seek medical attention appropriate to the severity of the injury.  If in doubt, sit them out.
  • Should the student receive medical attention for a suspected concussion, then a medical note must be requested to confirm the diagnosis of a concussion or indicate that a concussion has not been diagnosed. The teacher must complete an accident/Incident report.
  • If a concussion happens when the student is not at school, and a parent advises or a student self-reports that they have a concussion, then a staff member must contact the parents/guardians and request a medical note if one has not been provided.
  • Note: A concussion is a medical diagnosis given by a physician. In the event of a suspected concussion, a medical practitioner has the medical knowledge to diagnose the concussion and provide a medical note. Medical professionals may diagnose the concussion, identify pertinent recovery protocols, specify activity restrictions, and provide other relevant information. This information is important as schools prepare for ‘return to play’ and ‘return to learn’ conversations and schedules in consultation with medical professionals.

What must be done when a concussion is medically diagnosed?

  • The school must be provided with a copy of the medical note.
  • The school will make a note on the student’s record in PowerSchool with the applicable dates.
  • The student’s teachers must be informed of the injury and any information regarding the student’s recovery protocol that will impact learning.
  • Administrators must ask all teachers of the student affected by a concussion to ensure that they monitor the student while in class, be aware of activity restrictions and modify any activities that may impact the student’s recovery.

What are the Return to Play and/or Return to Learning protocols with a medical note?

  • Once there is a return to learn/play medical note, the Medical Alert is removed.
  • Staff are notified that the student can return to play/learning activities.
  • If the student is involved in physical activities and/or athletics, Physical Education teachers and/or coaches and teachers of high-impact activities must plan for a progressive return to play.

What should I know if obtaining a medical note proves difficult to obtain?

  • The primary reason for the protocol is to promote student safety.  The protocol is rooted in scientific evidence on concussions that indicates that this type of injury can have long-term physical and psychological impacts on the development of the brain.
  • The second reason is to mitigate the liability of the Board. The Board has acknowledged the risks created by concussions and committed to managing those injuries in a particular way.
  • When there is no note – exclude the child from activity until the parent provides one. Managing the medical needs of a child is the parent’s responsibility.

The CRT6 Concussion Recognition Tool (linked here) is useful in recognizing the signs and symptoms of a concussion.
