Halloween at MSS

Many have been asking about school expectations for Halloween Day on Tuesday, October 31. Halloween will continue to be a day of learning at Marshall Springs.  Students are welcome to wear their costumes for the full day or even part of the day if they choose.  We encourage students to wear their costume over their regular clothes or bring a change of clothes in the event that they become uncomfortable or find that their costume interferes with activities like gym or outdoor play.  The guidelines for costumes are:

  1. Must be school appropriate.
  2. No weapons in any way, shape, or form.
  3. No masks - faces must be visible.
  4. No blood or gore.

The reason behind these guidelines is that we want school to continue to be a safe, caring and welcoming place. We want to make sure that no one is scared or fearful in coming to school.  We thank all families for helping us continue to make our space a safe one. We will not be having parties in learning spaces, so we ask that you do not send in food/drinks/treats for sharing.

Student Progress Conferences

Our first round of student progress conferences (SPCs) will take place on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24.

  • Thursday, November 23

    • SPCs: 8:30am – 3:30pm (virtual through Microsoft Teams).

We will be using an online booking system again this year.  In order to book student progress conferences, you will need a MyCBE account.

Principal Advisory / Enrichment Society Meeting

The next meeting will take place on Monday, October 30 at 5:00pm at Marshall Springs.  We are looking to move from a Principal Advisory group to an official school council.  In order to accomplish this, we need parent/guardian volunteers to assume numerous vacancies to form a school council.

If this is of interest to you, please attend this meeting and/or contact me directly via email at kmgodfrey@cbe.ab.ca

Fine Arts Update

Students have nearly all completed their papier-mâché masterpieces this week and their work is on display throughout the school. The students have all created 3D animal masks/sculptures that were later finished by using acrylic paint and additional materials to bring them to life!

Our Grade Six students have begun their work created a Roy Lichtenstein inspired Pop Art painting in which they are using Benday Dots to punctuate a dramatic scene in a comic strip aesthetic. This process requires them to consider colour theory as they will have to combine colours that become a new shade when the viewer squints or observes the piece from a distance.

Some of our Grade 7 students have been moving into the exploration of creating “Palimpsest Art”. Palimpsest is defined as something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. Students are using collage and mixed media techniques to give an image a new narrative and meaning.

Many of our Grade 7 students and our Grade 8 students are also exploring realism through using a grid system to assist in rendering a realistic image of their choice. Students have learned about using value to create dimension and form in their work and how applying different hardness/softness of pencils (H to B Scale) will result in more contrast in their work.

Our Grade 9 students are moving into the exploration of realism as well and will be starting a hyper realistic rendering of a human eye in the days to come. This will be a step-by-step process in which various techniques will be applied and will strengthen their skills as observers when using their reference photos.

Dale Chihuly (Glass Artist) Jeff Koons (Sculptor) Anish Kapoor (Sculptor/Architect)
