Athletics at MSS

***IMPORTANT UPDATE TO ATHLETICS***

The attached letter is to inform parents about the requirements under Alberta’s Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, SA 2024, c F-2.5 (the “Act”), which came into force Sept. 1, 2025. This Act mandates that participation in female-only leagues, classes, or divisions be limited to athletes whose sex recorded at birth is female.

The CBE is implementing the Act, which requires the development of policies regarding athlete eligibility to protect fairness and safety in female sports. This Act, and its accompanying Regulation, sets out rules that will impact how sports are organized and who can participate in female-only leagues, classes, or divisions.

Every student athlete 12 years of age or older who registers to play in a female-only league, class or division (or their parent or guardian if the student athlete is between 12-18 years of age) will be required to confirm in writing that they understand and meet the eligibility requirements to compete as set out in the Act and the accompanying Fairness and Safety in Sport Regulation (the “Regulation”). Parents/guardians should familiarize themselves with the specific requirements of the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act.

Female students (12+ years old) who wish to try-out and/or participate in athletics will need to complete and submit the Athlete Eligibility Confirmation form. This form will be sent home with female students on Tuesday, September 2. Female students who have not submitted a signed Athlete Eligibility Confirmation form will not be able to try-out and/or participate in athletics. The Athlete Eligibility Confirmation form is good for one (1) school year.

MSS is proud to participate in all seven (7) athletic events offered in the middle school athletics (CMLSAA) calendar. Soccer, Cross-Country Running, and Basketball start the year off followed by Wrestling, Volleyball, Badminton, and Track & Field.  We encourage all students to get involved in our extra-curricular program, whether it is interscholastic or intramural, to enhance their physical, social, and emotional development. Students interested in interscholastic athletics must have completed the CBE annual athletic authorization form.

  • ALL Gr. 6,7,8,9 students are able to participate in CMLSAA athletic activities.
  • No-Cut Teams at MSS: Cross-Country Running, Wrestling, Track & Field.
  • Teams that make cuts at MSS: Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton.

Cross-Country Running and Soccer tryouts start the first week of September. Basketball tryouts start Monday, September 8. Tryout/practice dates/times/locations are posted on our Athletics webpage.

***Reminder*** Female students (12+ years old) must submit the Athlete Eligibility Confirmation form in order to tryout/participate.
