Student Behavior Expectations & Disruptions to Learning
Recently, we have seen an increase in disruptive classroom behaviours, disrespect towards MSS staff & substitute teachers, and damage to school equipment and technology.
- Students who are intentionally disrupting teaching and learning will be removed from class.
- Depending on the situation, a student could be given a reminder and returned to class, the student could be working independently in the office for the remainder of the day and/or be sent home. Parents/guardians will be notified via phone/email.
- Students are to keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
- There is no need to be touching other people. This has been a SIGNIFICANT issue lately.
- There is no need to be touching other peoples things/food that do not belong to you.
- Wrestling/Play-fighting is not acceptable at school.
- Running in the halls is not acceptable at any time.
- Intentional damage to school equipment and technology.
- Multiple chromebooks and Phys Ed equipment have been damaged. The cost to repair/replace the chromebooks alone is ~$1,500.
- We plan for accidents and general "wear & tear" - not intentional damage.
- Our inventory of damaged tech is increasing which means students access to technology to support learning is decreasing.
- Families of students found to be intentionally damaging MSS property and/or damaging property as the result of "goofing around" will be billed for the cost of repairs/replacement.
- Students can also have their access to technology suspended by school administration for inappropriate use.
Please reinforce these points with your child(ren). All students and staff deserve safe, caring, welcoming and inclusive learning environments that are disruption free so they can focus on teaching and learning. Also, students who are intentionally disregarding expectations will lose the privilege of attending field trips and/or off-site events for the remainder of the school year.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs): Grade 6 & 9
In May and June of this year, Grade 6 and 9 students across the province will participate in the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) using the Digital Assessment Platform (Vretta). Grade 6 and 9 students will complete PATs in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
Marshall Springs is implementing the new Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum this year. Therefore, we will not be administering the Grade 6 Social Studies PAT in 2025-26. Grade 6 Math, English Language Arts and Literature (ELAL), and Science will be administered and will reflect the new curriculum.
Results from these tests will provide Alberta Education, school administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, students and the public with information about what students know and can do in relation to provincial standards at the end of Grade 6 and 9. Provincial Achievement Tests are based on what students have been learning throughout the school year. The dates of the assessments are as follows:
- Grade 6 (No Social Studies due to NEW curriculum).
- ELA "A" (Written): Monday, May 25.
- ELA "B": Thursday, June 4.
- Science: Friday: June 12.
- Math "A": Monday, June 15.
- Math "B": Thursday, June 18.
- Grade 9
- ELA "A" (Written): Thursday, May 21.
- ELA "B": Tuesday, June 9.
