Good morning MSS families,
A full five (5) day week of learning ahead as we leave April and enter into May.
This weather is crazy. We all know Calgary weather is unpredictable, but this spring has been something else. It's amazing how we continue to have significant weather changes day after day. Students need to be prepared for quick changes in the weather (sometimes by the hour) as we continue to utilize our outdoor spaces for learning. A great deal of major updates in the update below. Enjoy your week.

Staffing Update & Planning for 2026 - 2027
Mr. Hidesh Bhardwaj has accepted an acting Principal position at another CBE middle school for the remainder of the 25-26 school year. His last day with students was Thursday and last day with MSS staff was Friday. With our deepest gratitude, we thank him for his tireless efforts in supporting the MSS community over the years and offer our best wishes as he begins a new chapter in his career.
Mrs. Danielle Burden has been appointed acting Assistant Principal at MSS for the remainder of the 25-26 school year. Mrs. Burden, who is currently in the CBE Assistant Principal Cohort, has been a learning leader at MSS for the past three years. This will be a seamless transition for Mrs. Burden as she is a significant member of our leadership team, she knows our students, and our community. We are very excited to have Mrs. Burden in this acting role.
We are currently working to fill Mrs. Burden's teaching role with a temporary teacher. Once we hire a suitable candidate, this information will be communicated to all MSS families.
Mr. Chisholm also completed his final day with MSS and the CBE on Friday. We wish him and his family all the best as they begin the next chapter in their lives in the Yukon. Mr. Mitchell Hewitt will be taking over for Mr. Chisholm on Monday, April 27. Mr. Hewitt has been a substitute teacher with MSS over the past few months - we are excited to have Mr. Hewitt join the MSS team for the remainder of the school year.
MSS also received our budget to begin planning for the 2026-2027 school year on April 23. Preliminary planning will be shared with school council on Monday, April 27.
MSS School Council Meeting and Updates

Student Behaviour Expectations at MSS
During the homeroom period on Monday, April 20, school administration and teachers reviewed student behaviour expectations at MSS with all students. Recently, we have seen an increase in disruptive classroom behaviours, disrespect towards MSS staff & substitute teachers, and damage to school equipment and technology. In summary, the main points that were reviewed:
- Students who are intentionally disrupting teaching and learning will be removed from class.
- Depending on the situation, a student could be given a reminder and returned to class, the student could be working independently in the office for the remainder of the day and/or be sent home. Parents/guardians will be notified via phone/email.
- Students are to keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
- There is no need to be touching other people.
- There is no need to be touching other peoples things/food that do not belong to you.
- Wrestling/Play-fighting is not acceptable at school.
- Running in the halls is not acceptable at any time.
- We had two (2) near misses last week involving students running in the halls colliding with others.
- Intentional damage to school equipment and technology.
- Multiple chromebooks and Phys Ed equipment have been damaged. The cost to repair/replace the chromebooks alone is ~$1,500.
- We plan for accidents and general "wear & tear" - not intentional damage.
- Our inventory of damaged tech is increasing which means students access to technology to support learning is decreasing.
- Families of students found to be intentionally damaging MSS property and/or damaging property as the result of "goofing around" will be billed for the cost of repairs/replacement.
- Students can also have their access to technology suspended by school administration for inappropriate use.
Please reinforce these points with your child(ren). All students and staff deserve safe, caring, welcoming and inclusive learning environments that are disruption free so they can focus on teaching and learning.
Modular Classrooms Approved for Marshall Springs
We are pleased to share that the Government of Alberta has approved six (6) new modular classrooms for Marshall Springs School. These classrooms will provide approximately 150 (6x25) additional student spaces at the school.
The modular classrooms were approved in response to the Calgary Board of Education’s annual request through the Modular Classroom Program.
Site assessments will begin shortly. During this time, you may notice CBE staff or contractors on the school grounds. We will share additional information once assessments and planning are complete and an installation timeline has been confirmed.
If you have any questions, please contact facilityprojects@cbe.ab.ca.
